Blake Beddingfield: No Scout Had Corey Davis Graded as a Top-10 Pick for Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jon Robinson's selection of Corey Davis fifth overall in 2017 "shocked the heck" out of his outgoing director of college scouting, Blake Beddingfield said on Thursday's episode of The Paul Kuharsky Podcast.

Beddingfield was fired by Robinson a few days after that draft concluded which was perhaps why he, and the scouting department, were in the dark about the selection. That was the end of 19 years in scouting with the organization for Beddingfield. He now consults with teams and is a regular contributor to this site.

He has his ups and downs like most long-term scouts. But any legitimacy check of the disciple of legend C.O. Brocato must include that he was instrumental in the drafting of Derrick Henry. He was asked a quastion about hopw the Titans judged Davis vs. Mike Williams in that draft.

Beddingfield recalled scouting Davis at Western Michigan when he had a huge game against Ball State, but said the receiver carried questions about the competition he faced for the bulk of his college career. 

"I thought five was high; it wasn't my choice," Beddingfield said. "He wasn't a guy -- he did not have a grade in the building from a scout that would indicate him going in the top 10. First rounder, no question, late first round, maybe early second, that type of player. Because he was never going to ascend to a 1. And when you talk about drafting a receiver in the top 10, top five, he's got to be a Number 1 and he was just not that caliber player.

"He was never in college, and he didn't project to be that in the NFL. And that's why a player like that only saw four of what could have been five years on his rookie contract."

Robinson was not included to discuss the matter.
