Chad Brinker and Mike BorgonziNASHVILLE, Tenn. – The headline from Cam Ward’s Monday pro day was when a hard rollout took him directly toward the Titans’ decision-makers, Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi.

He has a second to share something, and smartly quipped, “I’m solidifying it today.”

What stuck with me was what showed up on Jim Wyatt’s video of the moment next: Brinker and Borgonzi’s reaction as Ward turned to return to the middle of field to execute his next throw.

Both in navy polo shirts, arms crossed covering the credentials hanging from orange lanyards, they beamed, Brinker looking toward Borgonzi. It was six seconds before the video cut, and they were still smiling, clearly having enjoyed what they heard. [Unlocked]

If Ward is the Titans' man, at some point on the evening of April 24 Borgonzi and Brian Callahan will be asked when things crystalized for them organization on the quarterback. (If he isn't, could they take someone later?)

It may well be a different moment than the one Ward picked.

But if Ward is a successful Titan with a mythology, that lore starts there.

It left me thinking of Floyd Reese on the night of April 28, 2006, when the Titans drafted Vince Young because what he said then was a big piece of VY’s story, following Bud Adams’ declaration that “VY is my guy.”

“Last night at 2:30, I was on my knees praying … he will rewrite the position,” Reese said.

Ward won’t rewrite the position. Many who followed Young have been terrific two-dimensional players, run-threats with amazing production. Four of the top five running quarterbacks by rushing average played during or after Young’s career – Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Russell Wilson.

Ward is more about pocket mobility than big runs. This thorough review from Nate Tice is an excellent read.

It's an exciting time for the Titans. We know the record of drafting quarterbacks is poor. We know Ward isn't necessarily a can't-miss guy. To me, all the intrigue is whether this Titans regime is sold and if a franchise that's struggled through multiple regimes at the position can make it work for him.

If so, we'll see a lot more of those smiles from Brinker and Borgonzi.
