NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Cam Ward is drifting unnecessarily in the pocket, making throws falling backwards and showing a great deal of inconsistency with his footwork.

Fixing all that would go a long way to help the Titans show the growth Chad Brinker spoke of Tuesday night when he discussed the dismissal of Brian Callahan.

However, interim coach Mike McCoy made it clear on Wednesday in his first press conference that it won't be fixed all at once, and gradual improvement is what he and his staff are looking for from Ward and everyone.

“We talked last night a little bit about a couple of things and then on a weekly basis we’re going to be brutally honest with the players,” McCoy said. “We’re going to hold them all accountable. So there are certain things that you’re always going to individual period, you’re going to clean up all those things, there are going to be certain things that are going to change from a position (standpoint).

“I know you’re asking about Cam, but that’s with the entire football team. When something comes up and you see what happened the other day in the game, where there was some drifting and then the ball security in the pocket, things like that, we’ve got to clean up and that’s our job as coaches. That’s the challenge every week: what you’re doing with players. That’s what we love to do.”

While he’s got a whole football team to coach and try to reshape to the degree he can, Ward is Priority One.

Per Stathead, Ward is just the sixth quarterback since the turn of the century to have a completion percentage of 55.0 or less through his first six games beginning the season as a rookie

The Titans' offense ranks 32nd in yards, 31st in passing yards, 31st in rushing yards, 31st in scoring, 25th in the red zone, and 32nd in third-down offense.

“Every game, it's been something different,” McCoy said. “You look at that, and that's like you put a game plan together, and the things that work, things that don't work. We've got to execute better. That's everybody.

“That's all 11 guys on offense going out there and doing their jobs better. It's not any one person. It's everybody's in it together. If we all just eliminate a couple mistakes here and there in a game at different times, and we all play better, we'll have better results.”

The Titans have lost by 8, 22, 21, 26 and 10, and won by 1.

Better results might be wins, but they might amount to more competitive losses.

McCoy said game planning will be week-to-week based on a look at the opponent’s defense and a consideration of what Ward does best and what the Titans offense does best.

It’s a small list. But after Ward had success with tempo in Arizona when the Titans won, they showed no commitment to it in Las Vegas.

Putting him on the move and letting things go faster would be a good place to start, though it works against slowing the game down, which is generally a better thing for a team that gets blown out.
