Arden KeyNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Titans edge rusher Arden Key is about to be suspended for six games by the NFL for a violation of the rules against performance-enhancing drugs.

Key was in line to be the team's second starting edge rusher, working opposite Harold Landry with Jeffery Simmons and T'Vondre Sweat between them.

While the team spoke early in the offseason about Key as a situational pass rusher, its failure to add to the position meant Key was in line for a lot of three-down work at the spot.

Key is currently on the field with the Titans as part of their Tuesday training camp practice. Such news often comes from the NFL as part of a late Friday afternoon news dump. He is not among the players scheduled to talk today. His agent did not return a text.

UPDATE: After practice, I asked Callahan if the Titans have the resources to deal with the edge position without a suspended Key. In his answer, he said: "It's not something that you wanted to hear, but we don't really have a choice, we've got to go play football with who we have and if we can find someone else we will and if we can't then we've got to play with who we have."

Former Titan Denico Autry, now with the Texans, just got a similar suspension and was proactive in revealing it and explaining what happened.

Key would miss games against quarterback Caleb Williams of the Bears, Aaron Rodgers of the Jets, Jordan Love of the Packers, Tua Tagovailoa of the Dolphins, Anthony Richardson of the Colts and Josh Allen of the Bills. He would return Week Eight at the Lions against Jared Goff.

The options after Landry and Key currently include recent signee Shane Ray, Rashad Weaver, Caleb Murphy, Thomas Rush and undrafted Khalid Duke.

Carl Lawson, Yannick Ngakoue and Tyus Bowser are among the unsigned veterans currently on the market.

Key has 20 sacks in six seasons with the Raiders, 49ers, Jaguars and Titans.
